Product Description More than just a place to cook, the kitchen has become the heart and hub of the home. It’s where we entertain friends, spend time with family, and indulge in a moment alone. The modern kitchen has to be equipped for working, studying, socializing, and hanging out; it should be functional without sacrificing an ounce of style or comfort. Now, homeowners are putting more of themselves into the kitchens they renovate or build, working to create spaces that reflect their personalities and complement the way they live. In Lyn Peterson’s Real Life Kitchens, the acclaimed designer and decorator tells you everything you need to know to transform your kitchen.
This practical book is packed with cutting-edge ideas and information, from the latest options for appliances, countertops, and cabinetry to advances in seating, lighting, flooring, and kitchen configurations. Lyn Peterson’s Real Life Kitchens takes you step-by-step through the decisions you’ll need to make on all of the most important functional and stylish elements.
The Big Picture: Deciding when and why to update, knowing how to optimize your space, nailing down a budget, and learning from the shortcomings of your previous kitchen
The Layout: Thinking outside the traditional kitchen triangle, matching an island to traffic flow, and putting your plan to paper
The Appliances: From cooktops to warming drawers, dishwashers to refrigerators, the latest advances and options in all of the working elements
The Cabinetry: Choosing between ready-made, semi-custom, and custom; judging quality construction; saving money on this most expensive element of your renovation

The Lighting: The looks, the lingo, and the low down on task, natural, ambient, accent, and mood lighting
The Auxiliary Spaces: Pantry and storage options, wine cabinets and cellars, mudrooms, and a “desklet” for kitchen office activities like checking e-mail and scheduling
A Survival Guide: Must-have information for working with contractors, designers, and architects, as well as creating a substitute kitchen while yours is under construction

Lyn Peterson's Real Life Kitchens December 7, 2007 Susan L. (Cambridge, MA) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
What great timing for me to find this book! I had just begun plans to renovate my kitchen and everything I need to know is in this book! Questions about little details that I knew would trip me up later -- they are all covered. There are so many decisions to be made when renovating a kitchen, it's pretty overwhelming. This book covers all the bases. Nice photos and layout too.
Best of the Lot December 20, 2007 CindyC (Edison, NJ United States) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book is like a secret interior designers handbook for all to understand. It answers all questions and gives opinions of the author's own personal style as well as her clients. She projects actual dimensions (such as how much countertop overhang is needed at the kitchen island for a stool) so you know what you are talking about when you meet with the designers that you are going to purchase goods from. I have found this book much more helpful than all the other kitchen books I have combined. Well worth the money.
The best of the lot January 4, 2009 Reader in Bermuda 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My husband and I are at the beginning stage of a total home renovation, including a new kitchen addition. Thus far, I have purchased about a half dozen kitchen design books but none of them provides the practical advice to the extent that Lyn Peterson's book does. I could have saved my money on the other books as Real Life Kitchens is the design "bible" I was looking for. It's a little pricier than the others but well worth the extra money.
Wonderful June 5, 2009 Melissa (Los Angeles, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We are renovating our kitchen and I have read this book several times. What an excellent find. It has information about flooring, countertops, layout, cabinets, and great kitchens to look at. Throughout the book there are helpful tips that I believe will really make our kitchen efficient-- ie how deep and how high your pantry shelves should be so things don't disappear and you can reach items.
For our renovation, I am duplicating a wine/butler's pantry that I never would have thought of, plus a desk station (counter height b/c I don't sit down- another helpful hint) from this book. They are beautiful.
Very Useful Information July 12, 2009 sarayale (Oakhurst, NJ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I heard the author speak at the National Kitchen & Bath show and was impressed with her knowledge and advice, so I purchased her book. It is full of beautiful photos, but more importantly it has lots of good tips and information for anyone redoing or designing a kitchen. I am building a new home and although I have already read dozens of books, I still learned new things from her book. From the way the book is written it is clear that the author is intelligent, experienced in kitchen design, and focused on practicality and functionality. Especially for someone just starting to learn about kitchen design and planning, this book will be really useful and give you some great ideas. Much better to forego the mostly useless magazines and spend the money for this book which has real information.
